Empowering SMEs: Growth and Innovation

As we look to 2024, we are proud of the strides SME has made in improving the quality and experience of members. This year, we have expanded professional growth opportunities, strengthened chapter engagement and expanded access to industry resources.

From innovative initiatives to supporting members at all levels of the profession, SME’s commitment to promoting innovation professionals remains strong. These achievements are a testament to the collaborative efforts of our members, leaders and staff.

A key driver of these achievements has been the leadership of Gabriela Darras, Chair of the 2024 Council of Members. Under her guidance, we piloted the chapter funding model, launched the Women of SMART event and introduced online engagement banners that display manufacturing activities.

We’ve also created task forces to strengthen corporate and corporate membership programs and build market intelligence, provide data-driven decision-making insights and improve membership value.

Corporate and Institutional Membership

One of our most notable achievements has been the launch of the SME Membership Directory, connecting corporate and institutional members, enhancing visibility and opportunities for business opportunities such as co-ops, internship and full-time positions for students. We have also improved the business membership website to improve the user experience and highlight member benefits.

These efforts have led to renewal and the addition of new members. We also began regional support in northern South Carolina and northwestern Indiana, deepening our relationships throughout the manufacturing state.

Chapter Update

Our network of chapters continues to grow with new and renewed professional and student chapters, expanding our global reach. When we complete the pilot phase of our financial process, we expect to roll it out to all chapters.

We actively engaged with emerging professionals, using their input to shape our strategy and develop resources such as the Chapter Toolkit, the Faculty Advisor/Chapter Student Leaders and publications. updated for different groups of members, empowering chapters to grow their communities.

Engagement Programs

In 2024, we launched the Virtual Professional Development Series, including an SME Career Café and industry-specific Coffee Chats. This effort resulted in a 33% increase in enrollment and a 123% increase in non-member participation.

We also launched the EmpowerHer Series in partnership with the Alliance for Working Together, introducing young women to engineering and careers through real-life and in-person events.

Our expanded partnership with Women in Manufacturing has led to two joint craft fairs, boosting job search by 30% with nearly 700 recruits introduced to the Women of SMART Experience, which highlights women’s contribution to the industry.

Member Appreciation and the Future

Established last year, Member Appreciation Week is back in September, featuring new partnership programs with Lenovo and LA Fitness, member information and exclusive content like the “Manufacturing Industry Outlook” webinar. A special renewal discount is encouraged for continuing membership.

Looking ahead to 2025, we aim to build on this partnership through expanded affiliation programs, learning opportunities and networking platforms. One example is to facilitate the Bright Minds College Experience during the SME’s Manufacturing Technology Series to provide students with hands-on experience with the latest technologies that are changing the face of manufacturing.

Other initiatives planned for 2025 include:

  • Starting the first management leadership series
  • Expanding the chapter’s leadership development
  • Expanding the SMART Women’s Program

By prioritizing the views of our members, we will always adapt to the evolving needs of our community. We intend to make 2025 another important year, empowering our members and driving the future of manufacturing.
