1,500 Doctors Call on Trump to Release Health Care Plan
Only in his time debate against Vice President Kamala Harris, Donald Trump announced that he has “planning ideas” to improve the Affordable Care Act. Days before voters are set to cast their ballots on Election Day, no plan has emerged, and doctors are looking for answers.
A coalition of more than 1,500 American doctors and nurses are asking Trump to issue a real bill to fix the law he has despised and vowed to repeal for nearly a decade. In an open letter issued to Rolling Stone by the Committee to Protect Health Care, doctors note that in April Trump “spoke about his face, saying that he does not want to ‘repeal the ACA’ but rather do it “more.”
“Mr. Trump has refused or simply failed to share concrete plans to reform the ACA, including in recent negotiations. “Our patients and Americans across the country deserve to know what will happen next. for their health care in the second term of the Trump presidency so that they can make informed decisions on November 5.”
The meeting details several policies that Trump has used during his administration aimed at undermining the implementation of the ACA, and his support for congressional Republican efforts to repeal the law in its entirety.
On the first day of his presidency, Trump signed an executive order aimed at weakening the ACA’s individual mandate. His administration slashed funding for the ACA’s advertising and enrollment budget, which led to a decline in new enrollees during his administration. His administration also cut in half the public enrollment period during which Americans could sign up for health insurance.
During his 2020 re-election campaign, Trump supported lawsuits aimed at repealing the ACA in its entirety — without a replacement plan.
“We are going to come up with a health care policy. We’re not going to vote until after the election,” Trump said at the time. “We would have done it if we had the situation. We will bring it back, and it will be a better plan. We’re going to deliver a great health care plan, and we’re going to campaign on that plan. It will be much less expensive than Obamacare and more affordable in terms of deductibles. ”
Fast forward four years and the former president has changed his tune a bit. After years of trying to cripple the Affordable Care Act, Trump decided earlier this year to name its savior.
During his September debate against Harris, Trump said: “I had a choice to make when I was president. Do I keep it and make it as good as I can able? It will never be great. Or I felt obliged, even though it would have been better to let it go.”
He said: “I kept it.” “I did the right thing. But it still won’t be fun. And it is very expensive for people. And what we’re going to do is look at different projects. If we can come up with a plan that will cost our people, our citizens less money and have better health care than Obamacare, I will totally do it. But until then I was running it as well as it could be run.”
When pressed by Linsey Davis of ABC News to clarify whether he really had a plan to reform the ACA, Trump again came up empty.
“I have a plan,” Trump replied. “There are considerations and choices that we have to make. And you’re going to hear about it in the not-too-distant future.”
The not too distant future has arrived. With less than three weeks before the election, Trump remains a policy blank when it comes to anything other than mass deportations and thoughts of revenge against his political opponents.
